Cochlear Implant surgery successfully performed on four year old girl

A
rare cochlear implant surgery was successfully performed on a four-year
old girl, who had profound hearing loss since birth. This article
states that hearing loss was one of the most common major abnormalities
present at birth and if undetected would impede speech, language and
cognitive development,he said significant bilateral hearing loss is
present in about one to three per 1,000 newborns.

EHDI Community of Learners on Cultural Competence

The  National Center for Cultural Competence in partnership
with NCHAM is organizing a Community of Learners to support culturally
competent EHDI systems. Seven state teams comprised of three individuals
per state will be funded to participate. Applications
have been sent to state EHDI coordinators. Applications must be
received by March 20, 2012. Selected teams will attend a meeting in
Washington D.C. April 30 – May 2, 2012.  Contact

(BHI), 11 percent of Americans report having hearing difficulties –

what you think you know about your hearing. And, more children and teenagers are experiencing hearing loss. Nearly
one in five American teens now has some level of hearing loss, according
to a 2010 study by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in
Boston.

Westport seventh grader raises $26,000 for cochlear implant research

A
seventh-grader at Bedford Middle School recently raised $26,000 for
cochlear implant research during his bar mizvah celebration at Temple
Israel.

Matthew Reiser, having used a cochlear implant since
age four to offset profound hearing loss since birth, asked family and
friends to donate to the NYU Cochlear Implant Center instead of giving
gifts to him, according to a news release from his family.

Starkey Hearing Foundation Returns to Israel and Palestine to Promote Peace Through Better Hearing

The
Starkey Hearing Foundation Israel-Palestine Hearing Mission of Peace
once again brought Americans, Israelis and Palestinians together for a
common cause to address a critical need. For the second time in less
than a year, Starkey Hearing Foundation, which strives to change the
social consciousness of hearing and hearing health care, visited the
region in an effort to promote greater communication
and understanding among local communities through improved hearing. The
Starkey Hearing Foundation Israel-Palestine Hearing Mission of Peace II
took place on February 25-28, 2012 and served hearing impaired children
and adults. In addition to being the Foundation’s second visit to the
region, the visit marked the first time digital hearing aids were
distributed as part of an international hearing mission. The digital,
state-of-the-art hearing aids were donated by Starkey Hearing
Technologies.
